Day ends with a night at the Opera...

It is Samstag (Saturday) and we have to meet at 9 a.m.. We take the subway to the main train station. We find breakfast and then set out walking. WHAT? AGAIN??? My feet and legs are very tired from yesterday... oh well. We walk to what is considered the "White House" Kanzleramt of Germany, then again past the Parliment building and Brandemburg gate. We begin a 2 1/2 hour WALKING tour there. We had a very good guide who talked and took us to so many interesting, historic places. I cannot even begin to name all the places we went to, but I did get pictures of them all. We ended at the Berliner Dome church. There we finally got to SIT down in the soft, green grass and relax. It was an absolutely beautiful sunny day in Berlin. We split from the exchange students then, and made our way to a nice place for lunch. The restaurant sat right beside the Spree River, and with the park there, it literally looked like Spring Break! There were people EVERYWHERE! Sunbathing, drinking, eating, relaxing in comfortable chairs all around the park and water. We had a nice lunch, I had hummus and pita bread and a dark beer. Güt! We then continued walking and went to the Jewish Synagogue. It was not open, to our disappointment. Then we walked some more to the Jewish Museum. We spent over 2 hours there (walking) and looking at the mass collection of artifacts and pictures and information about the history and lives within the Jewish culture. Absolutely fascinating! Kim and Tammy, I was thinking about you!! From there we went walking some more in search of shorts for me. Since the weather got so sunny and warm, I didn't have enough COOL things packed with me to wear! I finally found a really cute black skirt at H & M for less than 10 euros. We passed a Dunkin Donuts, and Michael had a sweet tooth so we picked up some. Heading back towards home, we came to Brandenburg square, and there was a public viewing of an opera! It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen! While the upper class people were in the huge opera hall to our left, the rest of us had a huge screen and speakers set up (amazingly incredible sound!), and we were able to watch and listen to the fantastic opera happening simultaneously next door. There were hundreds of people sitting, standing, and laying down, enjoying the fabulous performance. We had a bratwurst and a beer for dinner, standing there reveling in the culture that was being presented for free. Just an amazing time! Walked to the subway for a short ride home. Freshened up, and went out, again, to Sandos for drinks and talk til midnight. FYI... estimated walking today... 15 MILES!!! No joke and my feet and legs are exhausted!
